LIVE CHAT

Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET.

What is Live Chat?

Live Chat is a service from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Health Information Center (NHLBI HIC) that instantly connects you to staff who can provide you with assistance. NHLBI’s Health Information Specialists on Live Chat will help you navigate NHLBI Web pages, find health information and publications, and assist with any problems encountered when placing an order.

However, our NHLBI HIC staff are not health care professionals, and NHLBI policy does not allow them to give medical advice or answer personal health/medical questions. If you have a personal medical question, please contact your physician or other health care provider.

Can I get the same information by telephone?

Yes. You can reach the NHLBI Health Information Center (HIC) between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, by telephone at 301-592-8573.

Will the NHLBI staff I’m chatting with know who I am?

No. NHLBI’s Live Help staff will only know what Web page you were on when you clicked the Live Help button and any information you share with them during the session.

What information should I not send?

Please DO NOT send confidential and personal information such as your social security number or medical information in your Live Help communications.

Do I need additional software to use NHLBI’s Live Chat?

No. Live Help works within the browser on your computer.

Can I get a computer virus using NHLBI’s Live Chat?

No. Live Chat can only send text and Web links to your computer.

Does Live Chat work with screen readers and other assistive technologies?

In 2008, the NHLBI evaluated the accessibility of the Live Chat feature located on the NHLBI Online Catalog for users who are blind or visually impaired.

The NHLBI conducted one-on-one test sessions with 10 individuals who self-reported as blind or visually impaired to ensure that the chat feature was usable and accessible to individuals who would access it using a screen reader such as JAWS® or other assistive technologies such as MAGic or ZoomText.

To take the most authentic approach to testing, the NHLBI conducted the sessions in participants' homes or offices. This enabled participants to use their assistive technologies under the conditions that they normally would. The NHLBI developed a set of tasks to evaluate the Live Chat feature and chose tasks that would help identify the feature's strengths and weaknesses, as well as gather feedback regarding user preferences.

What were the results of the accessibility testing?

Most users commented on many favorable aspects of the Live Chat feature, such as helpful and patient operators and a minimal use of graphics. However, a few accessibility and usability issues hindered users, such as a lack of specifically worded links and descriptive images to facilitate efficient screen reader navigation on the Web page and within the chat feature.

What did NHLBI do to enhance Live Chat for blind or visually impaired users?

First, the NHLBI reworded text on the chat icon so users searching for an online operator would more easily find the Live Chat feature. Second, the chat window was modified (to the extent allowed by the chat application) to include text on all graphics. Third, an alternative method for contacting the Health Information Center (HIC) was developed for blind or visually impaired users who experience difficulty with the Live Chat feature. Users now have the option to complete a Web callback request form to have HIC staff quickly call them to provide assistance navigating NHLBI Web pages, finding health information and publications, and handling any problems encountered when placing an order.
